Start with the operating airline
Verify the cancellation in the airline’s official application or contact channels. Look for automated rebooking proposals before purchasing a replacement ticket independently.
For itineraries with multiple legs, ask whether the airline can keep your journey on a single booking. Changes to a connected journey may affect baggage routing and transfer requirements.
Compare rebooking and refund options
A new flight on a similar route may be more useful than a refund if you still need to reach your destination. Compare timings, airports, connection requirements and additional costs.
Refund rights depend on the applicable jurisdiction and circumstances. In the United States, the DOT specifies refund requirements for cancelled or significantly changed flights when eligible travellers do not accept alternatives.
Keep costs and communication organised
Save airline messages, booking updates and receipts. If you pay for meals, overnight accommodation or alternative travel, check whether the airline authorised those expenses and what evidence it requires.
If you believe the airline has not applied the relevant rules, contact it in writing and preserve the case reference before escalating to a regulator or dispute process.
Policies and laws can change. Confirm urgent or booking-specific questions using the airline or regulator's official source.
